A MAN went "mad" after mixing medication and alcohol and attacked two women, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Del Bricknell ripped a 6ft drainpipe from a butcher's shop before causing a nuisance at a pub.

When the landlady of the Wheatsheaf in High Street, Stourport, remonstrated with him in the pub car park, he grabbed her hair, said Samantha Forsyth, prosecuting.

Arrested and taken to Kidderminster Police Station, he then grasped custody assistant Terri Overland through a cell hatch, severely bruising her hand.

Bricknell, 35, of Layamon Walk, Stourport, was jailed for 18 months, which included nine months of an unexpired prison licence period.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Overland and causing her actual bodily harm. He also admitted common assault on licensee Mrs June Slegh and criminal damage.

Miss Forsyth said police were alerted after reports that a man was going "mad" brandishing a pole on August 17 this year.

He wielded it inside the pub, despite being already barred. Mrs Slegh tried to stop him before she was attacked in front of customers.

Bricknell was drunk and aggressive when arrested. Miss Overland came to tell him a doctor had arrived when he grabbed her shirt through the cell hatch.

In 1998 he was sentenced to four- and-a-half years for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Adam Western, defending, said he had been on medication for depression but foolishly drank to excess after an argument with his girlfriend.

He said Bricknell had rebuilt his life since being released early from jail in February last year. He had re-established contact with his seven-year-old daughter and his partner's daughter looked on him as a father figure.

Judge David McEvoy QC described his rampage as "outrageous". He was becoming a danger to the public through drink and violence.
