GARDEN CLUB: The AGM took place in October. Coun David Roberts stood down as chairman on grounds of ill health. The meeting expressed its thanks for his sterling work since the formation of the club in 1992. A new committee was elected as follows: Hazel Bartlett chairperson, Penny Valender secretary, Stanley Saunders treasurer and Diane Stacey, Patrick Thwaites, Shirley Dunlop and Eric Beadle committee members.

The competition A Pot Grown Plant was won by Shirley Goulbourn, Addrienne Smylie was placed second, whilst Hazel Bartlett was third placed.

The speaker for the evening was Mr Joe Meredith, who was the gardener for 33 years at Little Compton Manor Garden. He showed a variety of photographs, which included pear trees planted in 1930. The owner was a Mr Read who established an accountancy tutoring college on the 12-acre site. This organisation is still producing entrants to the accountancy profession.

The November meeting will take place on Monday, November 25 at the usual time and venue. The speaker will be Mrs Irene Weston who will be illustrating Flowers of Australia. Mrs Weston has spoken to the club on previous occasions. The competition is Seasonal Arrangements in a Mug.
