PUPILS from a Worcester school have put their best feet forward to win a county-wide walking competition.

Elbury Mount Primary School has been awarded £250 by Worcestershire County Council.

During TravelWise Week, launched in September, the council challenged schools to encourage pupils to walk to school instead of using a car.

Two prizes of £250 were offered to schools who managed to achieve the highest percentage of pupils walking during the week.

The other prize was awarded to Dingleside Middle School in Redditch.

At Elbury Mount, 63 per cent of pupils ditched the car in favour of walking.

The school will use the money to develop their school travel plan, which looks at ways to encourage more pupils to walk, cycle or use public transport , rather than arrive at school by car.

"I was delighted to hear that so many pupils walked to school during the week," said Coun Alwyn Davies, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Sustainability and the Environment.

"Walking to school helps alleviate the school run congestion, reduces pollution and is a healthy alternative way to get to school."
