A MAN who referred to a cleaner at his social club as "a nig-nog, jungle bunny and nigger" has been ordered to pay her £1,000 compensation.

George Hood, who is a former secretary of Hereford Welsh Club, where the name-calling took place, was ordered to pay the money by an employment tribunal, after victim Amelda Anderson reported it to a race equality officer.

Mr Hood, of Hawthorne Grove, Hereford, denied making racist remarks about Mrs Anderson, who is a former cleaner at the club and is married to former club chairman Craig Anderson.

Mrs Anderson, who was unhappy with the outcome of a club meeting about the remarks, reported the racial discrimination to Neville Meredith, Herefordshire's race equality officer.

She sought compensation for injuries to her feelings, claiming the remarks had affected her work and home life.

Meeting

"How could I work at a place where nothing was done about it at the meeting," said Mrs Anderson, who conceded she had left her job of her own accord.

The tribunal, held at Hereford Shirehall yesterday, heard how the club's management committee felt the remarks were hearsay.

But the tribunal decided unanimously that Mrs Anderson had suffered discrimination after hearing testimony by witness and club cleaner Dorothy Bruce.

"Mr Hood came up to me and said for me to go for a cup of tea," she said at the tribunal.

"He said this will all stop tomorrow because the jungle bunny will be back."

The tribunal also heard how Mr Hood had used the words "nigger" and "nig-nog" about Mrs Anderson.

It ordered Mr Hood to pay £1,000 compensation, and the club £2,000 compensation, to Mrs Anderson.
