COUNTIES such as Worcestershire and Herefordshire look set to lose out again financially thanks to Government changes to the council grant system.

According to Philip Bradbourn, West Midlands MEP, rural areas in the West Midlands will lose out in relation to metropolitan centres, such as Birmingham.

He claims an extra £40m earmarked for the West Midlands is all going to inner-city areas and that, ultimately, cities will control the rural areas.

"This is yet another sign of a Government obsessed with metropolitan areas," said Mr Bradbourn.

Hatred

"All their policies point to a hatred of the countryside, whatever the problems they have. These proposals will see an extra £40m coming into our region and it's all going to the inner city.

"This is all part of the Government's plan to control everywhere from the cities. Their Regional Assemblies plan would end up with all rural communities controlled from Birmingham and even more funding will be kept for the cities.

"Yet again, this Government shows its contempt for our countryside and its dwellers - it is nothing short of a scandal."
