100 years ago

IN the recent number of the Geological Magazine, there is an account by Prof Groom of a new trilobite from the famous collection of the late Dr R B Grindrod. It was from the dictyonema shales of the Malvern Hills, and Professor Groom names it, in compliment to the geologist who discovered it, Acanthopleurella Grindrodi. It was found in the grey shales at the southern end of the hills. Malvern Gazette, October 31, 1902.

Alexandra's Circus and Hippodrome will visit Ledbury on Friday, November 7, and will exhibit in Mrs Bill's Circus Meadow, New Street. The chief event is the "Bike Sensation", the pursuit cycle track, built at an angle of 70 degrees, and 21ft in diameter at the base. Ledbury Free Press, November 1, 1902.

Links of friendship and understanding between Malvern and the French people were strengthened on Wednesday when the third annual dinner of Malvern Anglo-French Society was held at the Gold Hill Hotel. The guests of honour were Mon H Leutier, consul in Birmingham, Mon Malbert, dlgu culturel and Mon Jean Rosol, the distinguished singer. Malvern Gazette, October 31, 1952.

Congratulations to Mrs J Hickey, of Church Street, on winning a £5 prize in a Radio Luxembourg competition last week. The contest takes the form of a quiz, in which listeners have to identify a mystery voice during the broadcast of a serial detective play. Ledbury Reporter, November 7, 1952.

A suggestion that the former Redan public house on West Malvern Road, Malvern, should be put on the open market in the hope that it will be converted to provide housing has been backed by Malvern Hills District Council's housing committee. Malvern Gazette, November 3, 1977.

Residents in Little Marcle Road, Ledbury, are worried they may be forced to look out of their windows on to a high-security fence, such has been erected outside the sewage works further along the road. There was considerable concern at Severn Trent's insistence that the land, which the town council might buy for recreational purposes, should have a boundary fence, similar to the one now surrounding the sewage works.
