WELLAND ATHLETIC 2,
ALL BLACKS 3 (after extra-time)
THIS pulsating WFA Minor Cup tie could have gone either way as Welland surprised their more experienced opponents with an early strike by Garry Thackeray.
All Blacks equalised just before half time as Welland's midfield dominated, with Ed Lewis outstanding.
Honours remained even in the second half with Welland's solid back three of Roy and Matt Furlong and Brett Cullen thwarting the lively All Black forwards.
With four first team players unavailable, Welland benefited from having a large squad and it was one of these, 16 year old Tom Holland, who hit the bar from 25 yards and almost clinched it for Welland.
All Blacks then scored with a 30 yard shot in extra time and went further ahead as injuries to Jamie Thackeray and Tim Saunder took their toll.
With six minutes to go Holland again hit the bar from 25 yards with Matt Furlong netting the rebound. All Blacks wound the clock down and hung on to their 3-2 lead.
Welland, sponsored by the Swan Inn and Midland Communication in Upton, play away to New Inn 2002 in Pershore on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
