WORCESTER carpenter Richard Page is telling youngsters thinking about a military career that swapping his saw for a rifle was the best thing he ever did.

He was inspired to join the Army after hearing his uncle's tales of the Worcestershire Regiment and now serves with the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters.

He can drive an armoured vehicle, has served in Bosnia and Northern Ireland, been on exercise in Canada and on an International Patrol competition in Austria.

"At the age of 23, having completed my apprenticeship in carpentry, I decided to enlist and pursue my dreams," he said.

"I wanted to work outdoors and thought the Army would provide lots of adventure. It's been all I hoped for and more.".

The Army has used his success to promote a career in the forces.

"I have been on an Army Recruiters Course so that I can encourage other people to consider joining,"he said.
