A SCHIZOPHRENIC dad-to-be went to "sort someone out" with a baseball bat because he feared his pregnant girlfriend was under threat.

Andrew Lewis downed 15 cans of lager and phoned the police to tip them off about the fight before he grabbed the weapon, Worcester magistrates heard.

Suzanne Llewellyn, prosecuting, told the court a member of the public saw Lewis waving the baseball bat in Evesham's Crown Meadow on Sunday, July 7.

They also called the police.

"He was seen striking the palm of his hand with the baseball bat," she said.

Lewis was also heard shouting: "We're going to sort someone out."

She said that when police arrived, Lewis, who was with other people, appeared to be hyperactive.

He told the officers: "Leave the area now - we're going to sort out a fight."

Christopher Hilton, defending, said his 34-year-old client had consumed around 15 cans of lager, which had a particularly damaging effect because of his health problems.

"He has problems with depression and schizophrenia, for which he has medication, and on this day did not take medication as it reacts badly with alcohol," he said.

A third party who had made threats to Lewis' heavily-pregnant partner had caused the incident, he insisted.

"Understandably, he was very angry and upset and arranged there to be a confrontation between the two people," he added.

Mr Hilton said Lewis, who admitted using threatening behaviour, had telephoned police about the arranged fight.

A district judge granted Lewis, of Anne Crescent, Evesham, a 12-month conditional discharge.

He made no order for costs, but ordered the confiscation of the baseball bat.
