Monica Evans was the October speaker at the Wyre Forest and District Centre meeting at Blakedown parish room, talking on The Green Man Mystery.

The Green Man is associated with images in churches and inn signs, and its origins are obscure, but he is associated with oak leaves and the tree of life.

There are links with Norse gods and the pharaohs, but one of the earliest representations of the Green Man can be found in Iraq.

Lady Raglan first used the description "Green Man" in a book in 1939, prior to which he was referred to as "Jack (or John) of the Green".

He used to be regarded as a pagan image, but has become linked with Christian worship. Exeter Cathedral has several images of him.

Mrs Evans illustrated her talk with slides.
