A GRANDMOTHER has completed a gruelling four-day mountain trek in Peru to raise more than £3,000 for charity.

Seventy-year-old Beryl Jackson, of Jackson Crescent, Stourport, tackled the 47-kilometre challenge that took her to Andes peaks of more than 4,000 metres, in aid of the Children's Society.

The charity finds secure accommodation for deprived and abused youngsters.

Mrs Jackson had hoped to raise £2,500 - but she believes the final total could reach £3,500 when all the fundraising and sponsorship money has been collected.

But the trek has taken its toll on the sprightly septuagenarian.

"It was very hard - harder than I expected," she said. "The altitude made walking difficult and breathing difficult.

"I think I'll hang my boots up now."

Mrs Jackson was the oldest of 38 walkers on the hike - who together raised more than £100,000 for the cause - and said she got "terrific support" from guides and team leaders.

She added: "I've had a lot of support from Stourport and Areley Kings and I'm very thankful for that."

A ROBBER grabbed a shopper's purse outside Tesco store in Lombard Street, Stourport, before jumping into a getaway car.

The man struck as the woman walked out of the shop. He grabbed the purse from her hand and ran over the canal bridge and into Vale Road where he jumped into a grey people-carrier. The car headed off towards Kidderminster.

The attacker was white, aged about 20, 5ft 6 ins, with a dark woollen hat and anorak and carrying a yellow rucksack.
