HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: (Usually referred to as The Gardening Club) continues on its successful way as one of the village's best-attended organisations, and the regular news-sheet sent out to all members by secretary Edith Capell always makes very interesting reading. The speaker last month was Andy Pedrick, who is a long-term member and well known to all Harvingtonians, but who is now acquiring an increasingly large following among readers of a local magazine. His talk giving hints on how to maintain a greenhouse economically was well received. Several members of the society were mentioned with gratitude in church last Sunday by those responsible for the upkeep of the churchyard when the announcement was made that the weekend had seen the monthly tidy-up taking place. The small team of regular churchgoers who take on this monthly task are always extremely grateful when help is given by people who may have no immediate connection with church but who are willing to give time and effort to what they see as a village responsibility.

YOUTH PROJECT AND PLAYING FIELD: A report from Roger Beard written on behalf of the Youth Project and the Playing Field Committee contains welcome and exciting news concerning the progress being made in the plans to develop that area. It will be remembered that extra land was purchased some weeks ago and the separating hedge subsequently removed, though treatment of the land was then delayed because of unfavourable weather conditions. Now, however, it is expected that ploughing, levelling and seeding of the site should take place within the next two or three weeks with a fence erected around the playing area and groups of trees planted earlier at this time or in the Spring. A family picnic area will also be created by the Spring and new play equipment will be installed at the same time. The original, and still official, public right of way skirts the extended playing field and will remain intact outside the perimeter fence. It is hoped to improve and widen the right of way as the work progresses, thus making walking an easier proposition.

QUIZ: The Brains of Harvington Challenge Quiz instituted by St James' church Social Committee in the year 2000 will be repeated again on Friday evening this week with 13 village organisations taking part. There is room for supporters, and anyone fancying being present to support their team is cordially invited. There is no admission charge, but light refreshments will be on sale. Play begins promptly at 7.30pm.
