AN outstanding Worcestershire nurse has received recognition for her skills.

Cathy Banks managed to combine studying for her nursing diploma with bringing up her three children.

Last week, the hard work was all worthwhile as she graduated at Worcester Cathedral with a distinction in the course, as well as receiving the Winnie Matchett Prize for nursing. It is presented each year to the one outstanding nursing student and awarded for outstanding theoretical knowledge and practical skills on a Worcestershire ward.

The 34-year-old, who lives in the city, is currently working in cardiology at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

After leaving school she worked for the electricity board before having a family. She had thought about midwifery, but when she returned to the workforce, decided to enter general nursing.

Now she has gained the diploma, which combined theoretical study with practical experience at work.

"It's been fantastic and winning the Winnie Matchett prize is a wonderful bonus," she said.

"I've enjoyed my time at UCW thoroughly and I'm delighted to be back already."

Cathy has returned to UCW part-time to study for a BSc in Applied Professional Sciences, topping up her diploma to a degree.
