A DERELICT Droitwich hotel described as an "eyesore" by many townspeople will come under the spotlight today when planners discuss a bid to transform it into apartments.
Wychavon District Council's licensing and development control committee will consider an application by George Wimpey for the historic Worcestershire Hotel, which has stood empty since the mid 80s.
Wimpey plans to demolish the 19th Century building in St Andrew's Road, owned by the Impney Hotels Group, and transform the site into 96 two-bedroom apartments.
The area was recently earmarked on the district's Local Plan as an area where around 80 dwellings could be built.
It is thought mainly young couples or single people who want to live and work in Droitwich will be most attracted to the new properties.
If given the green light, some of the apartments will be ring-fenced for social housing, leaving 16 two-bedroom apartments available for rent or shared ownership.
Planning officers have recommended that councillors agree to the application.
