A NEW unit for kidney patients at Kidderminster Hospital is set to receive a visit from the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire today.

Michael Brinton is officially opening the haemodialysis unit.

The unit started taking patients in February, and is treating about 48 patients.

Before it opened, Worcestershire patients requiring dialysis had to travel to Dudley, Birmingham, Hereford and Gloucester three times a week.

Now it is possible for certain patients with renal conditions, who are assessed by renal specialists in Dudley and Birmingham as suitable for this treatment, to receive their dialysis at Kidderminster.

Funding was secured from NHS modernisation funds to help establish the service which hopes to treat even more patients from within and outside the county next year.

It is hoped the unit will be the first in developing a comprehensive range of renal services across Worcestershire over the next five to 10 years.
