ACTOR Robert Powell has promised theatre-goers a hugely entertaining evening when the Alan Bennett-penned double-bill in which he stars opens in Malvern on Monday (October 28).

Powell, famed for screen roles as diverse as a hapless detective (The Detectives), unwilling secret agent (The 39 Steps) and the lead in Jesus of Nazareth, plays opposite Liza Goddard in Single Spies.

The script for his latest work is, says Powell, terrific, and makes it worthwhile undergoing the chore that he hates most in his line of work - learning lines.

Writing such as Bennett's has attracted him to stage rather than screen.

"At the moment, the theatre is where by far the most interesting stuff is," he said.

"There are a few good things about on television but not enough."

However, Powell hopes to re-appear on TV when the right role comes along and admits to having some ideas up his sleeve. He said he would like to appear in a drama that would allow him to develop a character and relationships through a series.

Single Spies runs until Saturday, November 2, with performances at 8pm and 2.30pm and matines on the Wednesday and Saturday.
