TEN new jobs could be created with the opening of a Countrywide store in Malvern Link.

A planning application for change of use has been submitted by John Brook, owner of the B H Motors site at the Worcester Road/Townsend Way roundabout.

A previous application submitted in August by an agent acting on behalf of Mr Brook was recommended for refusal by planning officers.

Mr Brook decided to close his Seat and Proton showroom the same month because of what he said were the pressures of overheads, rules and regulations.

He confirmed this week that Countrywide intended to lease the site from him.

Countrywide, which is based in Worcester and has 34 stores across Britain, deals in farming supplies, equestrian equipment and feed, gardening tools and clothing.

"We feel that Malvern needs a Countrywide store," said managing director Ian Smith.

"These are our sort of people, our sort of town. We would be recruiting in the Malvern area."

Mr Smith said the store would serve the farming community between Malvern and Worcester.

"We would expect to be open within six to eight weeks if planners approve the idea," he said.

Malvern Hills District Council said the previous application contravened a county policy to refuse out of town centre retail developments unless there was a need and no other suitable sites.
