A CYCLING sandwich seller has been told she cannot peddle her wares in Broadway.

Rebecca Simpson's application to trade in the Cotswold village was turned down by Wychavon District Council's licensing committee last Thursday because of fears over litter and road safety.

Mrs Simpson, of Maugersbury, Gloucestershire, wanted to sell wrapped sandwiches from a tricycle in High Street but the committee felt this would be "detrimental to the environment".

Broadway Parish Council had objected to the application on the grounds that there are already four established businesses selling sandwiches.

Although there is already one tricycle-based business in the area they felt another would "detract from the visual appearance of the Broadway Conservation Area.

In response Mrs Simpson said she had hoped her application would be seen as healthy competition.

"I'm sure the ice cream tricycle has not drastically affected the other businesses that sell ice cream.

"The fact that the licence for the ice cream tricycle has been renewed for many years has established it as part of 'the visual appearance of the Broadway Conservation Area'.

The addition of a smaller tricycle would not 'detract from the visual appearance', given that there is one already established in Broadway."
