IN London, pensioners enjoy absolutely free travel by bus and train throughout the vast metropolis and beyond its borders. In Birmingham, senior citizens are allowed totally free travel not only within the city but as far out as Coventry. In comparison, Worcester's travel concessions for the elderly look somewhat pathetic.

Furthermore, many elderly folk will soon be paying more for home care. Meanwhile, the Faithful City's only theatre, The Swan, is faced with closure because of lack of funds. So much for Worcester being a city of culture.

Worcester's debt burden of £1.1m is no doubt partly due to poor management by the council during the last four years.

However, the real cause of this city's woe is its deprivation and victimisation by Westminster/Whitehall.

Financial support from central government for Worcester is paltry and parsimonious. Taxes paid by this city's people are used to subsidise the North west, North east, Scotland, Wales and the Six Counties. It's high time that county councillors, district councillors and the county's MPs got together and demanded justice for this city and county.
