THE two fire engines which attended a false alarm at the Everyman just before curtain up on Tuesday were, thankfully, not needed to put out a fire.

However, it might have been advisable to keep the crews at the theatre in case the sizzling pace of this exquisite production set fire to the curtains! The Good Company, under director Sue Pomeroy, has brought Austen's comedy of manners to life with wit and no little pathos.

The style, highly theatrical with Restoration-style mannerisms and asides to the audience, brings the period to life perfectly and the atmosphere is completed by beautiful dance and music.

Performances are excellent, led with consummate skill by Laura Howard as the witty matchmaker. Her early poise was beautifully counterpointed by her vulnerability to the charms of Mr Knightley (Brian Deacon) and her fears for her friend Harriet, played with great charm and energy by Sally Hayward.

Emma is at the Everyman until Saturday.
