THE Venerable John Williams, who once served in Redditch, has died of a heart attack after serving in the Diocese of Worcester for 63 years.

Mr Williams was vicar of St Stephen's Church, in Redditch, from 1948-1959.

From 1958-9 he was also Rural Dean of Bromsgrove, which includes the the Redditch area.

From 1967-70 he was Archdeacon of Dudley. He was then Archdeacon of Worcester and Canon Residentiary of Worcester Cathedral.

Mr Williams was in demand for preaching and taking services and, at 70, he was substitute chaplain at Long Lartin prison, Evesham.

Ten years later, he was still giving perceptive courses of sermons and addresses.

He leaves a wife, Mildred, daughter Elizabeth and son Peter. His funeral was at All Saints Church, Evesham yesterday.
