BIDFORD residents have hit out at 'lazy' motorists for parking irresponsibly and illegally outside a new school.

Wilkes Way residents are having problems moving their vehicles on weekday mornings because of inconsiderate parking from parents at the newly opened Bidford Primary School.

They want them to stop parking in the road, and instead to use the free car parks by the fire station in Bramley Way and behind The Anglo-Saxon Inn.

Andrew Wilkes, whose five-year-old daughter, Sophie, attends the new school, said: "People are parking down a road where they are not supposed to park. It even says in our deeds that we're not supposed to park on the road and it's not wide enough for the amount of traffic that is going down it."

"Some people are just abandoning their cars anywhere and in some cases, parking too close to the junction, which is illegal.

"A lot of it is down to motorists being lazy. If they had their way they'd drop their children off right at their desk!

"It's worrying from a safety point of view, because if it carries on, someone is going to get knocked down and killed. It's a hazard."

Another resident, Jane Miller, was also concerned about the safety aspect. She said: "If there was an emergency down the road, there would be no way a fire engine or ambulance could get down here.

"It's just a nightmare. These people are just lazy, there's a car park about 100 yards away from the school."

Headteacher Ellen Honeybunn said the school had received complaints about bad parking when the school opened earlier this month.

She said: "The residents are very upset that people are parking irresponsibly. I have the support of the local police and I have also written to all the parents asking them to park courteously. There is a free car park just 100 yards down from the school in Bramley Way."

Bidford County Councillor Peter Barnes said: "It's a shame that careless parking by drivers is causing problems for the residents of Wilkes Way.

"We need people to use a bit of consideration and park in the public car parks at the fire station and behind the Anglo-Saxon Inn. A walk always does you good."
