STOURPORT Swifts face an anxious wait to see if defender Steve Ulfig is fit to take over from Dave Davies in Saturday's battle of the early strugglers.

Tim Langford's second-from-bottom Swifts travel to basement club Rugby United in the Dr Martens League Western Division.

And the player-boss, without suspended skipper Davies, is hopeful Ulfig will have recovered from a bruised heel.

The former Bromsgrove Rovers man was unable to play in Tuesday's 1-0 friendly win over Cradley Town when veteran coach John Powell came on as substitute to score.

Langford said: "The result wasn't important as it gave those who haven't been playing regularly the chance to get some match fitness.

"The friendly was beneficial and something I'd like to do every two or three weeks, depending on numbers and injuries.

"We seem to be up to a full complement of fit players in the squad apart from Ulfig who's our main doubt."

Former Sheffield Wednesday striker O'Neill Donaldson, who scored against Solihull on his debut, is unlikely to be a regular due to his work in the media.

Langford explained: "He helped us out for a game which was the initial desire. If he has to put work first at the moment, that is understandable.

"I've spoken to another striker and I'm in the process of trying to get somebody in. I'm also looking at a couple of players but no approach has been put in for them."

Another attacking option, Ian Bennett, has been unavailable after his brother was killed in a road accident earlier this month.

But midfielder Tim Nicholls is back from holiday, while striker Kerry Giddings (groin) and Matt Beard (foot) will be fit.

Langford, who has recovered from his hamstring strain, added: "We have to take the positives out of the Solihull game into Saturday.

"If we can play like we did then and against Cinderford I would be quite confident of getting something out of the game.

"I wouldn't say we are a bad side but we are in the bottom two and Rugby may well be in exactly the same situation.

"But I still feel if we play to our best we will be a match for anybody in the league as we proved in the second half against Weston and for 90 minutes against Solihull."

Swifts have a county derby to look forward to when they head to Bromsgrove, who were promoted from the Midland Alliance last season, on Tuesday (7.45pm).
