IN what some describe as Broadway's most difficult challenge of the year for members - the Challis Cup - a greensome bogey competition for married couples played off half combined handicaps - was won by a delighted John and Jenny Bruton.

Their marriage-preserving score of +6 narrowly edged out Shaun and Debbie Thornhill on a countback.

A score of +4 earned ladies' captain Sheila Lawson and husband Alan third place honours ahead of Sigrid and Don Butler also on countback.

A dinner helped smooth out any marital crises that might have occurred earlier in the day!

At the Kitcat Cup at Tewkesbury Park, organised by the Gloucestershire County Ladies Association, Broadway fielded six club qualifiers.

Sue Edwards and Hazel Dickinson produced some excellent form on the day each scoring 40 stableford points with Edwards edged into second on a countback in the Silver Division with Dick-inson topping the Bronze standings.

The cup was won by Eileen White of Chipping Sodbury with 41 points.

Members were also among the winners at the Lady Marling Silver Cup held at Knowle near Bristol.

Pat Righton and Denise Parker were placed second and third respectively both reducing their handicaps on the day after posting identical net scores of 70.

It was the first time the former had ever played in mixed competition, while his partner had been successful four times in the past!
