IT is good to see some action on the town's war memorial (Shuttle/Times and News, September 12), but even if there were a parish or town council in Kidderminster, they would not have the responsibility to repair this memorial, as they do not own the land on which it stands.

The town's war memorial is in this state because of 30 years of neglect by Wyre Forest District Council, the owners of the land on which it stands. This task was handed to them when the town council handed over to the newly-formed district council in 1974.

This council has taken on responsibility for the two new memorials in this location, and has chosen to neglect the others.

It also seems strange that councillors have chosen to form a trust, of which some of them are trustees, showing a clear conflict of interests.

The names listed on the memorial are of people who made the supreme sacrifice for the good of all, not just Kidderminster. Had any of the current councillors ever seen active service they would better understand the need to repair and maintain this memorial for all, lest the reasons for their sacrifice, or their names, be forgotten.
