A disqualified driver foolishly tried to "take the rap" for a friend who was caught in a speed trap on the A456 in Blakedown, Hereford Crown Court was told.
John Rowberry was a passenger in the car but he first told police that he was the driver, said Morris Cooper, prosecuting.
Rowberry, 22, of Chester Road North, Kidderminster, later changed his story and said he had been offered £50 by his friend to take the blame.
He admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice and was ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work for the community and pay £250 costs.
Martin Butterworth, defending, said Rowberry was stupid to have claimed to be the driver. But he had settled down in recent months and obtained a job.
