VOLLEYBALL: Cleobury Mortimer started the campaign with a convincing 3-1 win for their West Midland League ladies side over last season's runners-up Kingsbury Comets.
Power serving from Becky Brookes combined with the hard-working defence of Lucy Nash and skipper Katherine Skelhorn ensured Cleobury cruised through the first two sets.
Junior Danielle Hinges played with a confidence beyond her years to help the team ease home 25-19, 25-18 with aggressive but controlled volleyball.
Kingsbury awoke in the third set and edged a tight contest 26-24 as a cheeky but clear winner from Brookes was not spotted by the officials.
However, normal service was resumed for the fourth set with Sophie Cook finding her attacking form to drive them home 25-18.
New signing Frances McMahon gave a solid debut as another tall fast-middle attacker.
