May I make a further comment on the subject of supermarket car parking.
I agree wholeheartedly with B Latham (letters, September 11) - there must be more traffic calming and driver education.
I have been fortunate enough to drive in Canada on several occasions and the rule in supermarket and shopping centre car parks over there is that the pedestrian has priority at all times.
Cars will always stop while you cross in front of them, whether or not you are on an official crossing.
And they will also stop some distance back so that you do not feel threatened.
I feel that it would be a good start in changing attitudes in this country if the store owners started putting up signs asking drivers to give way to pedestrians.
Perhaps they may like to comment on this suggestion.
