A FREE crisis service has been set up to provide emergency nurses for the sick and terminally ill in Cleobury Mortimer.

The Nightingale Nursing Fund, which relies solely on donations and fund-raising, has been created by the district nursing team which covers the village and neighbouring areas.

It will cover the costs of emergency respite and medical care for people who cannot get help from other agencies.

District nursing sister Pam Saunder began raising funds to cover the costs of the service last year and now has a £6,000 kitty.

The money will be used to pay agency carers and nurses to visit seriously ill patients and look after them during periods of crisis, or to help lighten the burden on a relative.

"I realised there was a gap in provision locally, especially for non-cancer patients. People with a range of serious illnesses, like multiple sclerosis, heart failure, cancer and lung disease, for example, might need assistance for an evening, overnight or for a few hours during the day.

"The idea is that the agency carer can provide respite to allow a relative to take a break or can simply offer extra support during crisis periods. The support offered can be the difference between someone staying in their home or having to go into hospital."

Sister Saunder will assess each person for their suitability for the service.

The scheme is organised voluntarily by the district nurses and every penny donated will be spent on providing care.

"We will only be able to provide as much help as we can pay for - it is really important that people support the fundraising efforts."

The next fund-raising event is a bingo night at the sports and social club in Cleobury Mortimer on Thursday October 3, starting at 8pm.
