THE new headteacher of a Worcester primary school says she is determined to take it out of special measures.

Sue Mason took the helm of Nunnery Wood Primary School this month.

Government inspectors visited the Prestwich Avenue school in May and found it was failing its pupils.

It has been put in special measures to turn it around and raise standards.

"We've got lots of ideas of how to move things forward," said Mrs Mason. "We've already started with a few things, putting plans in place.

"We're all ready for the challenge and the staff are very positive."

Questionnaires are being sent to parents for feedback and it is hoped they will offer support to the new head.

Mrs Mason was previously headteacher at Abbey Park First School in Pershore. She took over the headship at Nunnery Wood Primary School this term.

"It is a friendly, happy school with great pupils and a strong team of staff and governors who are wholeheartedly and enthusiastically committed to moving the school forward," she said.

"We know we have a lot of work to do, but we're ready and eager for the challenge. We'll soon be out of special measures."

The school was found to have significant weaknesses and was failing to give pupils an acceptable standard of education.

Standards throughout the school were low and Key Stage 2 results were within the country's bottom five per cent.

The leadership and management at the time of inspection were poor and some lessons were unsatisfactory.

Governors say that they are confident the school can be removed from special measures soon.

"The whole team is working enthusiastically under the leadership of Mrs Mason to provide our children with the best opportunities in all aspects of school life," said Martin Hodson, chair of governors.

"The school has clear plans for responding to the report and a strong vision for an accelerated period of progress during the coming year."
