WORCESTER'S new hospital was officially opened at a ceremony attended by dozens of county dignitaries.
The guests, who included Worcester City MP Mike Foster, hospital volunteers, and various health, emergency service and council bosses, watched as Health Secretary Alan Milburn unveiled an official plaque in the foyer of Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
After the ceremony, Mr Milburn said all those involved in creating the hospital and making sure its opening went smoothly should be congratulated.
He also made a parting shot at critics of the new hospital, who have targeted the "teething problems" it has suffered since opening.
"We think we can simply snap our fingers and wave a magic wand, but it is going to take time and effort to make the necessary changes," he said.
"It is worth remembering prior to the move staff were trying to deliver 21st Century care in 18th Century buildings.
"I know change is sometimes difficult and challenging, but it is necessary, and I look forward to providing the sort of care which is of the best quality."
Michael O'Riordan, chairman of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said the opening was the culmination of years of hard work.
"It was only thanks to the efforts of past chairmen that we are able to stand here today in what must be one of the best hospitals in the country," he said.
