THESE boots were made for walking was the tune being hummed around the town when hundreds of kind-hearted people took part in a charity walkathon.

Now the event, held last Sunday, is being hailed as a great success by its organisers, the Rotary Clubs of Droitwich Spa.

The walkathon, which centred around Vines Park, the canals and the Lido Park, raised money for Polio Plus - a project set up to eliminate polio from the world by 2004.

There were four different walks which people could choose from. They all began at Vines Park and ended in the Lido Park, where there was entertainment and music.

The shortest walk was two miles and they got gradually longer with a five mile walk and a ten mile hike.

Some brave soles even took on the mammoth task of the 22-mile trek and organisers are convinced some ran around as they completed it in a proud four hours and ten minutes.

Walkers bought walk cards and some were sponsored to boost the total profit made during the day.

An event spokesman said: "The organisers would like to offer a mighty big thank-you to all those who helped, not forgetting The Advertiser for all its support.

"At this time it is not known how much money has been raised to help defeat polio world-wide but the two clubs are delighted with the response from all around the town and district.

"The response was such that the clubs are determined to repeat their efforts," he added.
