A SPORTING scheme to enhance a well-used Rubery playing field is being revealed to residents at a public meeting tonight (Wed).

Reaside Junior School, in New Inns Lane, wants to build fencing, a 50-space car park and changing facilities, with toilets, at its sports field.

The enhancements would not only benefit Reaside students but also the many budding soccer stars who play for Callowbrook Swifts Football Club, which uses open space for training and matches.

Residents from Clent Road, Lyall Gardens, New Inns Lane, Thurloe Crescent and Woodham Close are invited to attend a meeting at Frankley Community High School, in New Street, from 6pm.

They will have the opportunity to view plans and question the school's development sub-committee members and Callowbrook Swifts chiefs.

The Government's Seed Challenge and Birmingham Local Education Authority have stumped up cash for the £235,000 project, although further funding is still needed.

Reaside claims its has a second rate-playing field because inadequate fencing allows dog walkers and vandals to trespass the site. Match days also create regular local congestion because parents and visiting teams have no place where to park except New Inns Lane.

A letter to residents from Reaside's governing body said: "This is a community sports partnership we have encouraged and which will continue to develop over the next few years.

"The playing field's security, as well as health and hygiene issues which affect the children's use of the field, have now become a major concern."

Plans for the scheme are lodged with Bromsgrove District Council for consideration.
