A "PAY on foot" barrier system could shortly be installed on all Bromsgrove's car parks.
The system, using pay on leaving barriers, means drivers only pay for as long as they park, not as at present by having to buy a ticket up front for a given period.
Traders in the town are said to be generally in favour of such a system as it reduces pressure on customers who will not have to keep an eye on the time to ensure they do not overstay and incur a penalty.
Last Wednesday, at a meeting behind closed doors, the district council's cabinet agreed to recommend to the full council that the system be brought in on a phased basis.
Three companies will be invited to submit the type of equipment required and costs involved.
It is understood the cabinet did not decide whether to extend the present hours of charging to 9pm in the evenings and on Sundays, or to scrap free parking on the three Saturdays preceding Christmas.
A future meeting will discuss car park staff levels. This will be essential if the authority decides to introduce parking charges after 9pm during the week when the new system is installed.
Alternatively, if a problem arises, a barrier release mechanism could be operated to free marooned motorists using the CCTV control centre.
