CHAIRMAN Mrs Betty Young welcomed the Spadesbourne Ladies members' back at the end of the summer holiday period, to the September meeting.

The usual business part of the evening was dealt with, Mrs Joan English suggested a day trip to Weston-Super-Mare and a visit to the specialised growers of Michaelmas Daisies, near to Malvern. It was thought that this visit may be a little difficult to organise at this late stage but the Weston day out is more promising, and could happen some time in October.

The speaker, Mrs Margaret Cook, was introduced and proceeded to hold us spellbound with her slides and recollections of her two years spent living in China.

Her husband works for a West Midland company, which decided for financial reasons, that they must relocate.

However, this was easier said than done. The Chinese workforce, though very willing, spoke no English and the English work force spoke no Chinese. Everything had to be organised through an interpreter.

The facilities offered in the way of factory accommodation and machinery was so archaic it had to be seen to be believed.

Nevertheless, through sheer hard work and determination the entire project was up and running most successfully within a few months, and the Chinese turned out to be a most willing, hard working and cheerful workforce.

Their determination to help take China from 19th century conditions straight through to the 21st century was breathtaking and was much admired.

Chairman Betty Long gave the vote of thanks.
