n I REPLY to Gary Webb in regard to disciplinary standards imposed on professional footballers in days of old.
I remember, while serving with the Army in 1941, I met a chap who had been an £8-per-week professional footballer with the old Bradford Park Avenue outfit in pre-war days. This chap said to me: "Army sergeant-majors are lambs compared to football managers!"
I know what he meant, or at least I think I do. Present-day players fitter than the old timers - I very much doubt it. No pampering before the war!
I was also amused with the way Mr Webb went out of his way to assure us that his season ticket is not with a West Midland Club.
Of course not, Mr Webb must identify with success. I suppose his wretched season ticket is with Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal.
No doubt he keeps his distance from the struggling outfits in the West Midland conurbation!
