SOLDIERS from Worcester's Army careers office will be bringing people down to earth with a bump tomorrow in aid of St Richard's Hospice.

High-flying members of the Army's Parachute Regiment will be at the city's Christopher Whitehead School with a parachute training tower as part of an Army careers information day for pupils tomorrow.

However, after the teenagers have completed their jump, the tower - which simulates the final part of the jump under highly-controlled conditions - will be open to the public in a bid to raise money for the Mayor's charities.

This year, the charities nominated are Worcester's St Richard's Hospice, the Worcestershire Blind Association and city branch of the Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen and Families Association - SSAFA.

Colour Sgt Pete Elcock, who runs the Foregate Street recruitment office, said the event was a good opportunity for people to have a go on the "highly popular" jump simulator while helping the charities raise much-needed funding.

"The tower is very popular attraction at shows with all ages," he said. "It's not often one of these towers is put up, so it is rare chance to have a go on one and raise money for good causes.

"Teams are welcome to join in as well as individuals. However, we want as many people as possible to have a go in order to raise as much money as possible."

He added that the tower was part of a day-long information event for pupils at the Bromwich Road high school interested in a career in the services.

He said with Worcestershire's extremely high education standards, teenagers from the county were ideal candidates for today's hi-tech Army.

"The Army of today is about using brains and not just brawn," he said.

"Of course, the job is physically demanding, but today's soldiers work with highly sophisticated equipment and need to be able to think-through highly challenging situations."

But he added in return, soldiers could continue their education and gain recognised qualifications, while enjoying a life of travel, adventure and extremely good wages.

"The military offers a highly rewarding career, both short-term and long- term," he added.
