MYSTERY surrounds the identity of a man believed to have been transferred from Worcester who attended a secret court appearance yesterday under heavy guard.

The man, listed only as "Christopher K", appeared at Gloucester Crown Court on unspecified charges, flanked by six plain-clothed police officers who remained with him at all times.

Despite a journalist challenging his decision, Judge Gabriel Hutton ordered the Press and public to keep out, but failed to make any formal order to prevent their attendance.

Court staff, who refused to give any information on the defendant, ensured the man's identity remained a secret by covering up a peep-hole in the courtroom door.

On arriving at the court, the defendant - described as being in his late middle age and wearing a beige jacket - was led in through the judge's private door.

Four witnesses, who were believed to be giving evidence at the mysterious trial, were also ushered into a waiting room before being told later they could leave.

The man was then driven away from the building in a people carrier, followed closely by an estate car.

A clerk of the court refused to divulge further details about the case, saying the judge had directed that the Press was not to be given any information.
