MATTHEW Clarke seems to think that it's all right for any democratic country - like India and Israel - to possess nuclear weapons, but not oppressive countries like Pakistan and Iraq (You Say, September 4).

May I point out that in May 1998, the West imposed sanctions on the democratic state of India for conducting underground nuclear tests.

In contrast, Pakistan is an undemocratic country also with a nuclear capability. However, Britain and America chooses to overlook this fact.

Also, Palestinians have been oppressed for years by the aggressive and democratic neighbouring state of Israel but, once again, Britain and America chooses to overlook these facts as well.
