WHY is it that when the issue of a Federal Europe is raised, certain correspondents to these columns fall into two categories, namely pro-American or English Nationalists.

Their tired-out warnings of Hitler, Nazi and German domination is polarising this whole issue with no room for any rational middle ground opinion.

In the post war years, while Britain rested on the laurels of her imperial past, Germany got on with building their broken-down country. Through the Cold War period, Germany managed to create a great economy.

In 1990, the Berlin Wall came down and East Germany was integrated back into the mother country. Presently, Germany's economy is experiencing a setback, which is partly due to the eastern integration, but hopefully, Germany's economy will come right again.

France's economy may not be that brilliant, but has an enviable health and railway system and is still retains its car production. France is one of Europe's leading nations in art, science and technology. The French achieved all this in spite of not selling their industry and labour to the first wide-eyed foreign opportunist that comes along.

Also, the majority of the EU members - some of whom were occupied by Germany in the Second World War - are prepared to forge ahead into a Federal Europe.

Surely, these countries haven't taken leave of their senses. Each country must want to economically succeed as the next one.
