1802: Many of our readers will doubtless recollect to have observed an apparently miserable object begging in the streets of this city who has lost one leg and had the other so much diseased as to excite the compassion of every beholder. This poor wretch was some time since taken to our House of Industry (the Workhouse) and, it being conjectured that he was possessed of money, he was questioned on the subject. He at length confessed that he had some and would point out where it was if taken to the spot. Being conveyed in a chair to a barn in the neighbourhood, he instructed the persons with him to dig under a manger where an earthen pot was at length discovered containing 20 guineas in gold and two guineas in silver.

He also produces an effective ointment for treating the Mange in dogs and horses.

1902: The trow "The Times," belonging to the Severn and Canal Carrying Company, was being towed down the Severn on Friday when she struck something hard in the bed of the river near Holt Fleet. She continued on her way for a short distance after the impact, but it was found that a hole had been knocked in her bows and she sank rapidly. She was laden with 100 tons of iron and had to be pumped out and moved.

William John Harrison, hotel keeper of the Victoria Hotel Restaurant in Broad Street, Worcester, was charged at the City Police Court with keeping a billiard table without a licence. Pol. Sgt Barnett gave evidence that on a visit to the hotel he saw several gentlemen playing billiards. Defendant was fined 20 shillings with costs.

"Furious Florence" - Florence Perks of Rack Alley, Worcester was fined 2s.6d at the City Police Court for being disorderly in The Butts.

Defendant said she that had been left in the house with nothing to eat and went out to find her husband at 12 o'clock at night.

1952: The Rt Rev Cyril Edgar Stuart, the Bishop of Uganda, has accepted the appointment of Assistant Bishop of Worcester and Rector of All Saints, Worcester.

A Crowd of several thousands saw three class records go by the board in a thrilling day's racing at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb. Peter Walker, driving a Jaguar, set up an all-time sports car record of 41.14 seconds while G.A Ruddock, in a Lester MG, beat the existing 1,500 cc sports car class record by more than five seconds. And Michael Christie in a Cooper broke the 1,107 cc record. Pride of place, however, went to Ken Wharton of Smethwick who virtually become British hill climb champion of the year when he won the premier award for the fastest time of the day. He made the ascent in 36.97 seconds.
