WORCESTER residents were today being invited to explore their heritage by taking a free tour of the Guildhall's 18th century cells.

The tours, also held yesterday, explore the dark world of crime and punishment in the place where prisoners, many of whom were sentenced to death, were held to await their fate.

There is also an exhibition featuring the moving stories of some of those condemned to die. The tours are part of the annual nationwide Heritage Open Days initiative.

Yesterday, the Guildhall hosted Worcester at War, an exhibition of the Worcestershire Regiment through the ages featuring historic uniforms and weapons.

The Commandery will also be staging an exhibition featuring battle stories from the past today.

"This is a great chance for people to take a look behind the scenes at the Guildhall," said Claire Rogers, support services manager at Worcester City Council.
