WORCESTERSHIRE families from communities under potential threat from flooding have attended as special meeting organised by the Environment Agency.

The delegates, including representatives from Worcester and Kempsey, travelled to the Agency's Solihull offices for the Regional Flooding Symposium.

They were given an overview of flood defence work in the region, including how the Agency warns and forecasts and the continuing work to improve their flood warning service.

The growing number of products designed to protect properties from flooding was also discussed.

It was revealed that a new British Standards Kite Mark is being developed so people can check if products meet certain standards.

Delegates were able to question Agency staff and there was a discussion about how the two groups could work together to minimise the impact of flooding.

Bewdley resident, Gill Holland, who is a member of the National Flood Forum, said the event had been useful.

"It was extremely valuable as an opportunity for an exchange of information.

"I hope the Midlands regional office will be able to set up further days like this to build co-operation between the Agency and community action groups," she said.

Next Monday, September 23, sees the start of the Environment Agency's Flood Awareness Campaign 2002.
