FOR the fourth year in succession, North Midlands League One club, Upton RFC once again hosted its annual seven-a-side rugby tournament last Saturday with teams from across the region taking part.

The popular event, which was won for the second year in succession by local rivals Ledbury RFC, attracted teams from across the region and has become a firm pre-season favourite fixture with players and supporters alike.

Teams included the host team Upton, Ledbury, Cheltenham Civil Service, the Gidley Sevens, Worcester Exiles, Worcester Wanderers and Malvern Exiles - there was even a surprise Fijian Islands touring side, the Islanders, who added some real sparkle to a memorable afternoon of running rugby.

But the day belonged to a well-drilled and determined Ledbury side who went on to beat Worcester Wanderers 28-5 in the final.

In their group games they defeated the athletic Islanders 10-5, The Gidleys 33-24 and Upton 17-0.

Upton's chairman Dave Gower was thrilled the event attracted a large number of supporters.

He said: "The tournament once again showed what a popular event it has become with both players and supporters alike. It is an excellent precursor to the season ahead testing players in terms of fitness and ball handling skills. I congratulate Ledbury on their success and look forward to welcoming everyone back next year."
