THE second annual Mike Sefton Memorial match, played in beautiful conditions at Colwall on Saturday, was won with nine balls to spare by the Short Leg XI captained by Tim Sefton.

More importantly, a lively crowd enjoyed a day of cricket, raffles, face painting, food and drink and helped raise £1,200 for the Wooden Spoon Society and the Prospect Cancer Hospice. WSS is a national charity, which raises money to improve the quality of life of disabled and disadvantaged children across the country, principally by providing opportunities for them to get involved in sport.

The Not Much on Top XI made a flying start to its innings but was pegged back in the middle order by a miserly spell of spin from Ray Anderton. With a solid display by Ken Hipwell and some quick scoring by skipper Will Sefton (49no), they eventually managed to reach 160 off their 30 overs.

This looked a small total early in the Short Leg reply with openers Joe Roberts-Powell and Stuart Edwards thrashing the bowling to all corners but the match looked set for a tight finish after Duncan Edwards took a couple of key wickets with some nippy seam bowling. However, the Short Leg XI were seen home comfortably in the end by a few lusty blows by Andy Archer and Stephen Gale, who hit the winning runs in the penultimate over.

After the match presentation losing captain Will Sefton said: "We'll be desperate to win next year but even more desperate to raise even more money for these charities."
