HUMAN rights, of course, are very important, but rights are only part of the story. There is also the question of duties and responsibilities.
Sometimes my freedoms have to be restricted in the interest of other peoples' needs. Traffic lights, for instance, are essential and we have patiently to wait our turn.
There is a concept in Christian circles, called The Common Good. This suggests, among other things, that for a happy and just society to flourish, we need to measure our actions against the general good of other people.
Driving around Malvern (and I make no apology for returning to this subject once again), I am often reminded of how thoughtlessly many people drive. So I am proposing a new society: it has no membership, no subscription and only one rule: a personal resolution, in the interest of the Common Good, to keep the speed limits while driving in built up areas. I recommend it to you.
