A WARNDON man who had been invited round to his ex-girlfriend's house for sex saw red when he ran upstairs to find her in bed with her new lover.

Worcester magistrates heard that the woman's new boyfriend, Andrew Bell, was between the sheets when he heard someone let themselves in through the front door.

Paul Gibbs, who maintained his ex asked him to pop round because they were still having a sexual relationship, walked in to the bedroom to find the pair together - and started throwing punches.

"The defendant came into the bedroom and proceeded to punch the injured party four or five times in the mouth," said Julie Rosamond, prosecuting.

"Gibbs shouted at him to get outside. He didn't hit back and the defendant left the house."

Rob Macrory, defending, said the jobless father-of-one had bumped into his ex-girlfriend earlier in the day and she had invited him round to the house in Chedworth Drive.

"They had been in a relationship and had split up about six months ago," he said.

"But they continued seeing each other behind the back of her new boyfriend.

"When he went round, he was somewhat surprised to find the current boyfriend there."

Gibbs, aged 27, of Ennerdale Close, denied he had thrown five punches, claiming that he only hit Mr Bell twice.

"The punches were not in self-defence but they were a result of the shock and outrage he felt at finding him there," Mr Macrory said.

"It was a stupid, spontaneous and quick reaction. He is quite embarrassed to be before the court today."

Gibbs was given a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £75 compensation to Mr Bell, plus £45 court costs.
