DEAR EDITOR - First we had a certain councillor telling us, 'Trust me, I know what's best for Droitwich" .... how arrogant.

Now we are being asked for our opinion regarding the new Waitrose supermarket.. Why? I ask - when not so long back the people of Droitwich had a poll regarding a supermarket on the Kidderminster road, yet were told by Wychavon District Council that whatever the outcome of that poll they would not take any notice of it!

I wholeheartedly agree with comments recently made in the Advertiser/Messenger that the people of Droitwich get what they deserve unless they speak up. Alas even when they do it falls on deaf ears!

For what it's worth I must congratulate the powers that be, designers and architects on creating the biggest eyesore in Droitwich since the Kays warehouse! The proposed Waitrose supermarket is a monstrosity and totally out of character with the town.

May I suggest that given the vast amount of money it takes to build such a thing, and the vast amount of money paid to those involved, could they not foresee the many problems (parking being a minor point) that this building is going to create?

Wychavon are going to demolish a wonderful building - the Worcestershire Hotel, to build more housing. Why not make the building safe, keep its frontage and put Waitrose inside it? It would have car parking, be centralised, and at least look nicer than the proposed building, and at least it would be a supermarket unlike the same countless thousands scattered around our towns and countryside! A novelty maybe but anything is better than the proposed site!

Speaking of which ... once the canal is opened up and holiday-makers start to arrive, Waitrose will be their first glimpse of historic Droitwich Spa!

Whatever the people of Droitwich say or do, I suspect that Wychavon and the town council, under the present administrations, have already made up their minds and will continue to turn a deaf ear to the wishes and needs of Droitwich people!

I would like to know why the powers that be are so adamant about siting Waitrose along the Saltway when other alternatives have been suggested by towns people. Money and the lack of, spring to mind for some of those involved!

Trev Kings,

Droitwich (via email).
