GIRLS, fancy doing something a little different this weekend?

The fire brigade is anxious to recruit more women firefighters and is holding a special awareness day on Sunday for women who are thinking about joining the fire service.

The event, which is being held at Droitwich Spa Fire Station in Friar Street, will give women an insight into the life of a firefighter and the vital role they play in the community.

It will also include information about Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire Brigade's recruitment process. Women firefighters will be on hand to answer any questions.

Droitwich station commander Phil Major says that the fire brigade is not just for men.

"The awareness day is all about making women realise that they can do the job just as well as men.

"It is an all day event and visitors will get the chance to see what the job is like.

"We give them the opportunity to cut up a car using our cutting equipment, they will be able to go in a breathing chamber and if they want, they will be able to take part in the brigade's fitness test.

"It really is the perfect opportunity for women who have considered a career in the brigade to come along and see what we're all about," he added.

The awareness day is open to women, aged 17-and-a-half upwards.

If you would like to go along you need to book yourself a place, as they are limited, by calling the brigade's personnel department on 01905 24454.
