WORK will start soon to remove a number of public payphones in the Bromsgrove area.

British Telecom (BT) have selected seven payphones they wish to remove, due to them being underused, as part of its ongoing review of the public payphone network.

In Bromsgrove BT will remove the payphone at the end of Watt Close, two in Stratford Road, one near School Drive, and the other near Slideslow Farm.

The firm plans to remove a further three from Rednal and one in Alvechurch.

BT stated in a letter to Bromsgrove District Council that it is not removing the service from communities as there will be, in the majority of cases, an alternative box within 400 metres.

it also adds that this distance might be slightly further in a very limited number of cases where usage is exceptionally low.
